The Stay Wise Inn was the last thing before heading out of town toward the Black Canyon of the Gunnison which was convenient for our early start to the park the following day. It is not really walking distance to restaurants, etc. However, the Horsefly Brewery is just a wee bit up the road and was excellent with fantastic live band out of Paonia the night we were there. Per a local’s suggestion, our first night we drove back across to the south end of town, which was less than 15 minutes, to eat at Tacos and Beer, where the octopus and shrimp tacos were out of this world. Glad we listened. Rooms were standard and staff was very pleasant. They are in the process of becoming part of the Best Western network, which is supposed to be complete (possibly after some upgrades) by the end of 2024. The biggest disappointment was that the hot tub had been completely cemented in, but we did enjoy a cool dip in the pool after a hot day at the park. A separate note that due to the bridge out to Crested Butte, we took the northern route over McClure Pass and it was beautiful with almost zero traffic on a Sunday morning.

This is no longer the Stay Wise Inn of Montrose. Best Western took over the property, but this has not yet been updated on any booking website. So, look for a Best Western sign and save yourself the aggravation of driving around in circles. The lobby and elevator were being renovated when we were there, so it felt as if we were entering a construction site. But I’m sure it will be lovely when the renovation is complete. Our room was modern and nicely decorated, but there wasn’t a lot of space between the foot of the bed and the desk, tv stand, shelving, etc. The full-length mirror was on a wall a few inches from one of the beds, which made seeing your full length in the mirror impossible. The shower and sink areas were modern. Beds were very comfortable. Everything was super clean. There was a closet-like space near the door, but no rod and hangers so no place to hang a coat/jacket. As with most Best Westerns, the complimentary breakfast was very good, with some hot items. No complaints really. These are little things. It was just fine for one night.

Stay Wise Inn was a reasonable motel and in a really good location for visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park which was about 15 minutes away. Since we were visiting a lot of national parks, we didn't spend much time at the hotel itself. However, the hotel does have an indoor pool and laundry facilities, both of which we used. Also listed on their website is breakfast, but we had to leave too early to be able to partake in the breakfast, so I don't know if it was any good. The motel was on a busy street and close to gas stations, stores, etc. If I get to Montrose again, I will not hesitate to stay at Stay Wise Inn.

Staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms lobby and such were nice, not super fancy but nice, and clean. Breakfast had a good variety, eggs, sausage, waffles, bagels, ect. The area was quiet, yet it wasn't far from anything in town. Parking was free. Plus they had a few board games we could check out during our stay. Pool looked clean and nice, plus there was an area by the pool to sit both inside and outside on a nice day.

Grillo

Bed mattress was very comfortable- 4 pillows! Lighting for reading in bed was good A/C was quiet- didn’t wake me Nice big wall TV Spacious breakfast room with waffles, makes it hot breaker Pleasing looking- lobby had an antler chandelier Front desk was pleasant to deal with There was even an indoor pool- wish I had the every to use it Huge bathroom - wheelchair accessible (not that we needed that)
